A '.max' file is a project file, simply open it in 3 ds Max (File > Open). You can then select the model and export it as FBX (File > Export > Export Selected). 3 ds Max, mesh splitet into many parts when importing. FBX or OBJ Models (Importing).

Does anyone know how i might be able to convert these. I don't have the budget for 3dsmax or cinema4d right not, and I'm fine with some quality loss. Let me know what you think![/quote]

The models I found are .c4d and .max The models I found are .c4d and .max
a brief bit of research suggests that both are propitiatory formats so you most likely need someone who has the associated programs or purchase a converter that has licensed that from the software developers and would explain why you cannot import into hitfilm. Others may know different.
Personally I'd just look for an alternative in a format that hitfilm can import or in a format you can get into blender which is free then export from that to .obj etc. I'm doing that just now looking for some terrain models there seems to be plenty out there from free to paid or you could create yourself in blender for free then use in hitfilm.- Hi if you have access to max or cinema you can just export them as obj files., if you dont you can download a trail version of 3ds max which will allow you to export max files to obj

Id love to but i do not have a windows computer...- Not sure about c4d but max runs on Mac as well as windows. If your using Linux just post the files in the forum and I can save it to obj I use max
- 3D Studio Max has never been released for Mac, Nate066. It has to run under Windows.
I'm pretty sure you can open .max files and .c4d files in Blender. Have you contacted the creator of the models to see if he can get them to you in a compatible format? 3D Studio Max has never been released for Mac, Nate066. It has to run under Windows.
